Relief and Rehabilitation Projects:

Tsunami

NAMCO started the journey of disaster response initiatives ever since Tsunami hit the Nagapattinam district in 2004.

NAMCO partnered with Exonera International, a renowned not-for-profit and implemented relief efforts across the district through financial support from USAID. As part of this partnership, NAMCO trained women and men from vulnerable families from two villages - Kameswaram and Vizhundamavadi in Keezhaiyur block of Nagapattinam district on skill development in coir mat making, repairing of hand pumps, repairing of sewing machines and palm leaves products making.

Identified the needy area and started 36 Neighborhood Free Tuition centers at Thiruvarur and Vedaranyam blocks of Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts respectively with the support of Bhoomika Trust, Chennai.

Organized a special training to the NGOs of the disaster prone areas at Nagapattinam on Disaster preparedness and management.

Conducted skill training on palm leaves products making, coir mat and rope making and lab technician (six months duration)  to young girls with the support of CARITAS and FVTRS, Bangalore.

Flood

In 2015, Tamil Nadu was severely affected by a devastating flood. Several districts were marooned for days and people lost their homes, assets, crops and livelihoods. In partnership with AIMS India Foundation, NAMCO undertook relief initiatives in the districts of Cuddalore, Chenglepet and Chennai, which are the worst affected. NAMCO provide dry ration kits and shelter kits.

Kaja Cyclone

In 2018, Nagapattinam and parts of Thiruvarur districts were severely hit by the ‘Kaja’ cyclone, which was one of the worst cyclones in the recent years in Tamil Nadu, especially in terms of the damages it has caused. NAMCO mobilized support from AIMS India Foundation, CARE India and Fullerton Financial Services and extended relief support to a large number of affected families.

 

Covid

Recently in 2021, communities across the state of Tamil Nadu were ravaged by the pandemic, COVID-19. People lost their livelihoods for a good number of months in the two years when the pandemic was at its peak. NAMCO partnered with AIMS India Foundation, Khalsa Aid India Foundation and Children India Foundation and extended relief support to the most affected families.

  • Supplied dry ration to 185 families in Vedaranyam block of Nagapattinam district with the support of Manitham Trust and Aims India Foundation.
  • Distributed relief materials to 100 families of Vedaranyam block with support of Children India Foundation (CIF), Bangalore.
  • Distributed food to poor street dwellers in Thiruvarur town with the support of donors from UK. Supplied dry ration kits to 161 women headed families with the support of Khalsa Aid.
  • Distributed grocery and rice kits to mugrant families at Thirukkaravasal village, Thiruvarur block and Thiruvarur town with the support of Manav Jagriti Foundation, Bangalore.
  • Organuzed vaccination campaigns in five panchayats of Vedaranyam block (Voimedu, Thennadar, Panchanathilkulam, Seruthalaikkaduand Ayakkaranpulam ) with the support of Children India Foundation, Bangalore. During the campaign, NAMCO distributed masks, sanitizers etc., to all participants. Further, NAMCO organized awareness programme in 20 villages on preventive measures of Covid such as wearing of masks, social distancing and hand washing etc.
  • Distributed oxygen concentrators to Primary Health centres at Ayakkaranpulam, Voimedu, Kodiyakkarai of Vedaranyam block of Nagapattinam district with the support of Red Cross Society, Bangalore. Additionally, distributed over two lakh masks to front line workers.
  • Supplied medical kits to PHC, Kariyapattinam with support of Children India Foundation and Tdh Foundation.
  • Distributed grocery kits to poor families in Vedaranyam block with the support of Our Village- Our Responsibility Group.
  • Distributed safety kits to SHG members and organized 10 medical camps in Thiruvarur with the support of WORD, Namakkal & Fullerton India  Credit Company Ltd.
