NAMCO (National Mother and Child welfare Organisation), as it is popularly known in its communities is a not-for-profit development organisation established in 1992. It is registered as a society in 1992 under the ‘Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act’, 1860. It envisions catalyzing dignified life with justice and upholding of human rights for the poor. NAMCO, since its inception has embarked on a mission of creating an enabling environment for protection of child rights, empowerment of women and the overall well-being of poor and marginalized communities.
NAMCO believes that poverty is multi-faceted, and therefore fighting poverty requires a multi-pronged approach. Also, the impact of poverty is severe on women and children, affecting them disproportionately than their counterparts. NAMCO has been implementing multi-sectoral programs that focused on development of women and children. They include programs on health & compassion, care and support, education, sustainable livelihoods for the poor, environment and disaster response and risk reduction.
NAMCO has a strong presence in in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Cauvery River Delta districts such as Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam, although it has worked in several other districts in the state. Additionally it has a strong network with other development organizations in the state. It is a member of several networks such as ‘Campaign Against Child Labour’, Tamil Nadu Voluntary Health Association, CLEAN, a national network of clean energy practitioners etc. Further, NAMCO has taken leadership role at the district level to steer the activities of these networks, which are all well aligned with its vision
